What is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a fibrous non-flammable paper-like material used in many household products.  When asbestos-containing products, such as HVAC duct wraps, flooring tiles and other construction materials, are broken up or disturbed, the microscopic asbestos fibers can be suspended in the air and inhaled by anyone in the area.  And these fibers can remain in the air for a very long time.

Why is it a Problem?

Health officials have determined that Asbestos is a carcinogen that can cause lung cancer.  When you breathe air containing fibers of Asbestos, you increase your risk of getting lung cancer.  While asbestos exposure has diminished from the levels of past decades, individuals should still be concerned about the risk—particularly when asbestos-containing products are disturbed.

Where is it a Problem?

The greatest risk of exposure to Asbestos inside the home typically comes from  old HVAC ductwork.  If you live in an older home chances are you may have Asbestos.  Older homes (pre 1940’s) with forced air heating systems and ductwork were typically ‘wrapped’ with Asbestos (used as a tape to seal joints).  These wraps can deteriorate and release Asbestos fibers into the ductwork and throughout the home (via the air stream).

How do you get rid of it?

If you find that your home has Asbestos materials (e.g. Asbestos wrapped ducts), there are ways to safely remove them.   We recommend you consult with a HVAC specialist about having the sections of ducts containing the material removed (and replaced with new ductwork).
